Most people dread roleplay – but the beauty of this method is that all the acting is done by professionals!
Our team of actors take each participant’s written outline as the basis upon which to improvise dialogue in a
‘nightmare meeting’. Delegates interact – as themselves - with the actor-in-character, receiving coaching
from the facilitator as they go along.
It’s a powerful way of sharing tips and ideas and trying out behavioural tactics that can be as daring as you like!
The Play4Real team creates a customised piece of drama on the basis of careful research into the ‘story’ of
your chosen business issue. A metaphorical or ‘parallel universe’ approach brings your story to life, but never
points the finger at particular people.
Our actors then perform the play on the spot in front of your participants, as a way of illuminating behaviours
and relationships afresh. The action is usually open-ended; it could concern past or present experience,
or could depict a future scenario that you would like to make live as theatre as a way of playing
‘what if…?’
The facilitator then guides the audience ‘in forum’. They redirect the actors-in-character to suggest ‘doing it
differently’, and actors improvise accordingly. This may bring the fiction to a ‘happy ending’; it will certainly show
up the behaviours that are getting in the way, giving everyone a chance to voice opinions on how to improve
things – and instantly see their suggestions succeed or fail in practice. It’s ‘roleplaying by proxy’:
the audience engage with this fictitious world in a way that seems so real, they go away with new
insights and new inspiration about tackling actualities.
Play4Real will ‘shadow’ individuals (or a whole team) in the workplace as they conduct or attend meetings,
interact informally around the office, negotiate on the phone, compose emails… whatever business activity
would be most useful about which to receive feedback.
Every effort is of course made to carry this out with sensitivity and as much ‘invisibility’ as possible. Periods of
observation are sandwiched between private consultation and coaching sessions in which practical exercises
help with voice, body and all aspects of personal impact.
It’s an invaluable way to raise awareness of behaviours and help an individual understand the non-verbal nuances
that can make or break successful working relationships.
